Integrated Listening Systems

We understand that behavioral and learning challenges are the primary reasons that most families contact Wild Roots Therapy. Our team is here to help you discover some of the root causes of these concerns and help your child, family, and educational team reach your goals. Through our thorough evaluation process, we can determine if using the Integrated Listening Systems (ILS) tools would be an appropriate fit for your family. The listening systems are often used in the clinic but can also be used from the comfort of your home anywhere in the state! The Integrated Listening Systems programs target the nervous system using research based on polyvagal theory.

What our families report back to us about using Integrated Listening Systems as part of their occupational therapy program,

“We all benefit from the Safe and Sound listening program! After my son completes the 5 hours he sleeps better, is in a generally more mellow state, and follows directions without arguing. We come back to this program twice a year for a reboot!” S.R.

Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a five-day auditory intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience.

Based on Dr. Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, by calming the physiological and emotional state, the door is opened for improved communication and more successful therapy.

The SSP is a research-based therapy showing significant results in just five days in the following areas:

  • Social and emotional difficulties
  • Auditory sensitivities
  • Anxiety and trauma-related challenges
  • Inattention
  • Stressors that impact social engagement

Emotional and physiological state are critical to how we approach the task at hand. So when a client has better state control, not only can they be more socially engaged, they are more open to therapy. Better state regulation improves therapeutic outcomes.

This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage. This allows the client to better interpret not only human speech but, importantly, the emotional meaning of language. Once interpersonal interactions improve, spontaneous social behaviors and an enhanced ability to learn, self-regulate and engage are often seen.

What is the Focus System?

The Focus System is the core product for improving brain function through the implementation of the iLs method: brain and body integration through multisensory input. The Focus System is a clinical-level intervention designed for home use. Focus System programs consist of therapeutically-treated music combined with fun movement activities, and, when ready, cognitive challenges to further activate brain networks. The flexibility of 60-minute or 30-minute versions of the programs, which target specific goals, make implementation easy in clinics, schools, and homes.

How Does It Work?

Focus System programs provide simultaneous multisensory input to help develop new and reinforce existing pathways governing the organization of the body and brain function.

Therapeutic music is delivered via its’ air and bone conduction headphones, providing auditory input to the brain and sensory input to the body. Movement activities, customizable for all levels, provide additional sensory and motor input for body organization.

Finally, cognitive activities, added later, challenge the brain to process multiple pieces of simultaneous information, which is reflective of demands required of the brain in our day-to-day world.

Especially in younger people and those recovering from injury, this staged approach develops a foundation that may never have been fully developed or was interrupted due to an event. With appropriate stimulation, the brain’s ability to successfully process and retain information leads to better academic outcomes. In addition, there is an increased ability to control impulses, self-regulate behavior and engage appropriately with others.

The Focus System Includes:

  • 10-hour Calming Program
  • 60-hour Sensory & Motor Program
  • 40-hour Concentration & Attention Program
  • 40-hour Reading & Auditory Processing Program
  • Two 24-hour Optimal Performance Programs
  • A Playbook and Integration Kit for movement activities
